  6.  Version 5.0a has the following enhancements:
  7.  1) New enhanced online help.
  8.  2) New drag-and-drop capability to move and rearrange menu items
  9.     across the menu pages and into a trash can.
  10.  3) Winmenu executes the programs in the startup group of Program Manager. 
  11.     Note: Only when Winmenu is replacing program manager
  12.  4) The ability to change the name of the pages in each menu section to
  13.     further organize the menu items.
  14.  5) The menu sections are shown in the main screen at all times
  15.   
  16.  NOTE: USERS OF PREVIOUS VERSION OF WINMENU!!!!!!!
  17.   This version of Winmenu is NOT compatible with the menu definitions
  18.   of previous versions. However, an utility is enclosed with the files
  19.   to automatically convert the old format to the new 5.0 format. Please,
  20.   read "Converting from previous versions..." in the online help.

  22.   Additional features:
  23.  1) Any of the blue Ribbon utilities can be disabled.
  24.  2) Any of the blue ribbon utilities can also be accessed from the system
  25.     menu while WinMenu is minimized for added convinience.
  26.  3) WinMenu can now execute a program passed via the command line when 
  27.     Windows is invoked from DOS. Example:  WIN CALENDAR  to execute
  28.     CALENDAR.EXE .
  29.  4) Winmenu can optionally categorize menu items in "sections".  A new 
  30.    "Sections" menu is displayed to allow users to choose the desired menu 
  31.     section to display. Each section holds up to 80 menu items.  Up to 20 
  32.     sections may be defined. This feature effectively increase the menu
  33.     capabilities of Winmenu to handle up to 1600 menu items.
  34.  5) Online helps available.
  35.  6) The screen saver can be invoked immediately.

  37.  Winmenu is a menu/shell system for Windows 3.1 or above with a 3D look.
  38.  Designed to help smooth the transition to the Windows environment,
  39.  Winmenu looks like a conventional DOS menu but yet powerfull enough
  40.  to replace the Program Manager.  Perfect for those users that are
  41.  not willing to spend time learning the program manager and/or feel
  42.  intimidated to the overwhelming world of icons and groups. Winmenu
  43.  displays a consistent menu with a great look to make the user feel
  44.  productive right from the start.  This version is written in C. 
  45.  
  46.  You may launch programs from the menu  or  from the command line in the
  47.  RUN window.   Also, utilize the  associations from the WIN.INI to find and
  48.  execute underlying applications.  The  menu holds up to 72 menu items 
  49.  organized in 5 pages. Type the menu  line number and press the ENTER  
  50.  key to fast execute any desired  application. Or double click over the  menu
  51.  line. Displays percentage  of free  resources. Menu items can easily  be 
  52.  added or changed online or offline.  With the MinOnUse and AutoRestore
  53.  options,  you can set WINMENU to automatically minimize and restore it-
  54.  self when running programs.

  56.  Winmenu allows users to customize the utility ribbon displayed at the
  57.  top most of the menu screen. This "ribbon" can hold up to nine frequently
  58.  use program's icons for easy access. The programs in the ribbon can also be 
  59.  executed from the system menu while the menu is iconized for added convinience.

  61.  As a shell, it automatically runs all  the programs that the program manager 
  62.  also runs at load time. Shareware $20 U.S.  A network version is available.

  64.  INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:  (20 days trial)

  66.   Create a directory on your hard drive. Example: C:\WINMENU.
  67.   Be sure to copy all the WINMENU files in this directory.

  75.   The following files are needed in your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and 
  76.   should already be found there as part of the Windows 3.1 system files:

  79.      SHELL.DLL                     
  80.      TOOLHELP.DLL
  81.      MMSYSTEM.DLL

  83.    Winmenu will create WINMENU.INI; where it stores and maintain  all 
  84. the program's data and configuration. Hence, your WIN.INI is never modified.

  86.   HOW TO RUN WINMENU:
  87.  
  88.   From the DOS prompt:
  89.  
  90.    1) Be sure you are in the WINMENU directory and type WIN WINMENU
  91.       then press ENTER.
  92.    
  93.   From the Program Manager:
  94.  
  95.     Select the RUN option from the FILE menu in Program Manager.
  96.     Type C:\WINMENU\WINMENU.EXE at the command line prompt and press
  97.     the ENTER key or click the OK button.
  98.  
  99.    To replace program manager:  (Windows 3.x and above only)
  100.     Make a backup of the file SYSTEM.INI found on your \WINDOWS directory.
  101.     Use your favorite text editor to load the SYSTEM.INI file found in the 
  102.     your \WINDOWS directory. Look for the line that start with SHELL= and 
  103.     modify it to look like this:
  104.  
  105.            SHELL=C:\WINMENU\WINMENU.EXE
  106.     
  107.     Save the file!.  The next time you run Windows, WINMENU will be 
  108.     displayed instead of the Program Manager. If you ever decide to
  109.     restore the Program Manager, just modify the SHELL= line to look
  110.     like SHELL=PROGMAN.EXE and save it. Or restore SYSTEM.INI with 
  111.     your backup copy.

  115.     TO ADD,CHANGE or DELETE MENU ITEMS:
  116.  
  117.     Several options: 
  118.     a) Click with the LEFT button of the mouse over the menu line that
  119.      you wish to add/change or delete.  Press CTRL+A.
  120.  
  121.     b) or, Type the menu line number you wish to add or modify and...
  122.          press CTRL+A 
  123.   
  124.  
  125.     or for those programmers / support staff:
  126.     c) Look for the text file WINMENU.INI in the directory where
  127.      WINMENU files reside. (Or create this file inside this directory)
  128.      Create or add menu lines as follow:
  129.  
  130.      The first line must contain:   [MenuItems]
  131.      The second line must contain:  NoOfItems=xx
  132.      where xx is the highest menu line number used. You may set xx as 72.
  133.      (i.e:  NoOfItems=72 )
  134.  
  135.      The next lines will hold each menu line information. 4 keywords
  136.      are used for each menu line:  
  137.          AppNamexx=       ( holds the menu description)
  138.          AppFileNamexx=   ( holds the program path,file name + parameters)
  139.          AppWorkDirxx=    ( the default directory (optional) )
  140.          AppRunTypexx=    ( 0= Normal Run, 1=Minimized )
  141.  
  142.      where xx is the menu line number of reference.
  143.      The following example defines two menu items:

  159.   NOTE:  This method of adding or modifying menu items is OPTIONAL. You
  160.   should use the online method (above described).

  164.  ADDITIONAL OPTIONS:
  165.

  169.    Title=The Company Name, Inc.

  171.  The MinOnUse option automatically minimize WINMENU when you 
  172.  executes a program.  If the MinOnUse and AutoRestore are set,  then 
  173.  AutoRestore will  automatically restore and display back WINMENU
  174.  after  all  other  programs have  being closed or minimized. These options
  175.  are set as enabled (1) by default. You may set both options online from
  176.  the Options menu.        
  177.  
  178.  The Title=  option allows you to set the company name which will be displayed
  179.  in the Windows Title. This option can not be set online.
  180.  
  181. TO CHANGE THE DEFAULT PROGRAM NAMES ON THE UTILITY RIBBON:
  182.  
  183.   The utility ribbon allows the user to quickly run 9 utility programs (i.e Calendar, Notepad,
  184.  etc. ) by just clicking over their respective icon. You can also, change the default program
  185.  for each of these utilities by simply overwriting the corresponding line in the [Accessories] 
  186.  section of the WINMENU.INI file.  The [Accessories] section of the WINMENU.INI holds
  187.  the configuration and data for the accessory programs. The format is as follows:
  188.  
  189.  Accessoryx=filename,description,icon
  190.          /\
  191.    where x is the accessory order number from 1 to 9.
  192.    filename is the complete path and filename of the executable program.
  193.    description is a 30 characters or less description of the program.
  194.    icon is a .ICO, .EXE or .DLL file which contain the ICON.
  195.  
  196.   Note: the icon is optional. Winmenu will use the first icon it finds
  197.   in the executable. If none found, and none was specified, the file GENERIC.ICO 
  198.   will be used. If GENERIC.ICO is not found, no ICON will be displayed.

  213.  Note: If you wish to disable any of the accessories, just enter the word
  214.  UNDEFINED after the (=) sign. Example:  Accessory5=UNDEFINED
  215.  WinMenu will attemp to display the icon EMPTY.ICO in the accessory defined
  216.  as UNDEFINED. If EMPTY.ICO is not found, no ICON will be displayed!. A small
  217.  beep will sound whenever the user attempts to click over the disabled 
  218.  accessory. 
  219.  
  220.  Note#2: Accessory8 and 9 will attemp to run programs that you might not have
  221.  or use.  You should at least modify them to run valid programs or disable
  222.  them as follows:

  225. Accessory9=UNDEFINED

  228.  
  229. THE SECTIONS  MENU
  230.  
  231. The Sections menu allows you to select the section you wish to display.  
  232. Winmenu can divide the menu in sections (i,e Word Processing, Finance, 
  233. Communications, etc..)  to better organize the menu items.  Single users of 
  234. Winmenu have the option to define their own sections.  However, most single 
  235. users do not really need more than 80 menu items.  Note for network users: 
  236. the network administrator creates the menu sections and menu items for the 
  237. users. Network users can not change the configuration as defined by the 
  238. network administrator.

  240. Creating Sections:
  241.   Use your favorite text editor and pull the file WINMENU.INI located where 
  242.   WINMENU.EXE resides.  Search for the line  [Config] or create this line at 
  243.   the end.  You can define sections under the [Config] line as follows:

  245. INIfile1=Section Name, INI filename
  246.  
  247. You can add up to 20 sections using INIline1=   to  INIline20=.  The Section 
  248. names must not be larger thatn 35 characters long.  Examples:
  249.

  251. Defaut=General
  252. INIfile1=General,winmenu.ini
  253. INIfile2=Word Processing,wordpro.ini
  254. INIfile3=Communications,comm.ini
  255. etc...
  256. Note: the.INI files may optionally have a path specified.  Winmenu looks 
  257. for these files in the \WINMENU directory. Save the WINMENU.INI file .  Next 
  258. time you run Winmenu,  click over the Sections menu and select the desired 
  259. section. Add, change or delete menu items as normal.

  261. Default= line is created and updated automatically to display the last section
  262. used.  You may manually include the Default= line to set a startup section.

  280. companies can maintain menu access from a central location. It also allows
  281. the network administrator to set menu lines for all the users based on the
